The best fiber for hot weather. Made from flax, it wicks moisture faster than cotton, dries quickly, and gets softer with every wash. It wrinkles heavily — lean into it or choose a linen-cotton blend.
Look for: European Flax certification (grown in Western Europe, no irrigation, traceable).
Care: machine wash cold gentle, line dry.
The cold-weather staple. Naturally insulating, odor-resistant, and temperature-regulating — you can wear it multiple times between washes. Quality varies a lot: fine merino (under 18.5 microns) is soft against skin; coarser grades will itch.
Look for: RWS certification (animal welfare + land management).
Care: hand wash or machine delicate, cold. Lay flat to dry — never hang wet.
The softest fiber you'll find at mainstream prices. Lighter than wool, exceptionally warm, and beautiful when well-made. Cheap cashmere pills badly — look for 2-ply construction and Grade A fiber (15–16 microns). A brand that publishes specs is worth trusting more.
Look for: Good Cashmere Standard (GCS) for animal welfare.
Care: hand wash cold, lay flat to dry, store folded with cedar.
The most luxurious natural fiber — smooth, lustrous, and naturally hypoallergenic. Cool in warm weather, drapes beautifully, and nothing synthetic fully replicates it. High maintenance and shows sweat stains, so best for occasion and warm-weather pieces.
Look for: 14–16 momme weight for clothing (heavier = more durable). Mulberry silk is the most common and consistent.
Care: hand wash cold or dry clean, never tumble dry.
Made from wood pulp (eucalyptus or beech) via a closed-loop process — one of the more environmentally responsible fibers available. Silky-smooth, drapey, and moisture-wicking. Often blended with linen or cotton, where it adds softness without compromising breathability.
Care: machine wash gentle, cold. Can weaken when wet — don't wring.
